Background
Imagine MTV is starting a new program about financial literacy and discovers you have become a skilled investor after participating in The Stock Market Game program at school. Pretend they offered you a summer internship to write and produce a weekly financial program. The time slot they’ve given you allows you to read your ideas and comments, of 700 words or less, on camera. Your program can deal with current domestic and international events, such as changes in consumer spending, interest rates, the Federal Reserve, prices of oil and other resources, government regulation, jobs, the housing market, congressional legislation, economic recovery funding or any other events you think can affect the stock market.
Topic
Pick an issue and write your presentation for the first week’s episode. You can use an issue from above or choose your own. Explain how the event influences (positively or negatively) a particular stock, bond or mutual fund that you choose. Explain why the event would have that impact. Explain to your viewers why they should either consider, or avoid, your identified investment at the present time. You could even comment on what might cause you to change your recommendation in the future. Be sure to tell your viewers why an understanding of long term saving and investing is important to their futures. If you have time in the final seconds of your “broadcast” give your viewers a “shout out” about what they can expect in upcoming episodes of your summer program. |
Guidelines and
Directions
Six easy steps to walk you through InvestWrite:
FIRST, what you need to know about InvestWrite entries:
- You may submit no more than six entries from any classroom and only one entry per student. If you have more than one class participating in The Stock Market Game program you may submit up to six entries per class.
- All submitted entries must address the contest assignment as stated on this website.
- Each entry must be an original work, representing the student's own research, thinking, and writing.
SECOND, share these InvestWrite GUIDELINES with your students:
- Each student may submit only one entry with a maximum of 700 words.
- The title chosen by each student (excluding the author's name) must appear at the top of the first page of the text. If references are cited, include them following the last page of the text. (Please note: only the body of the essay will be included in the word count, the title and the works cited will not count against the 700 word limit.)
- The format for references or works cited can be chosen by the teacher.
- Identification of the student or teacher in the essay will result in disqualification.
- Since the judges will base their decision on the author's understanding of the subject matter, rationale, and writing style, please do the same when you judge. View judging criteria.
- All essays must be submitted in plain text; no charts, graphs or symbols will be accepted.
THIRD, discuss the background with your class and assign the due date. Make sure you give yourself enough time to read and select entries before the InvestWrite online submission deadline December 03, 2010.
FOURTH, read the InvestWrite entries and choose no more than six entries per class to submit on behalf of your students. Each entry must be entered onto the InvestWrite website to be eligible. Simply cut and paste the entry from any word processing application.
